Imma going to participate in the West End Celebration this weekend here on the edge of Monterey Bay @thewestendcelebration Woot! I create under the name ‘Really Boss Apparel’. My last name is REALLY Boss, so I come by it properly. I repurpose secondhand, thrifted clothes into such things as shirt/jackets, Quilted Jeans and Satchels. Stitching is my meditation and it has kept me sane through the last few election cycles. Reworking vintage clothing is SUSTAINABLE and my handiwork is sturdy, timeless and will last years, not months. This here is my epic video of a trip I’m calling ‘Glacier to Glacier’. This trip made for a 4K, 12 day journey from Santa Cruz to Montana, linking more or less Glacier National Park and Glacier Point in Yosemite. My buddy tad and I went around the bend, rolled through the Oregon Coast, redwoods, Crater Lake, Sun Valley Idaho (thanks for the swank accommodations, Don Robb!), Mt. Took some time away from stitching to embark on this epic 4000 mile moto trip with my buddy Tad. Now coming around the bend and heading home. I have been mostly shooting video, so these pics are just a peek. Look for an edited travelogue in a few more days. I have rolled through the Oregon Coast, redwoods, Crater Lake, sun valley Idaho (thanks for the swank accommodations, Don Robb!) and Glacier national park. But I’m still in the road for another 3 days, which will include passing through mt. Shasta and Lake Tahoe before finishing in Santa Cruz.

I reuse and make better by turning one shirt inside out and stitch it as the lining to the second. I keep the two collars and cuffs. It feels a bit like flower petals at the wrist. The hem is straight across, ‘bolero’ style, at the belt line. It’s REALLY is just me stitching, and Boss is REALLY my last name!
Each one takes approximately 3 hours to create I use a combination of walking foot and hand stitching to make this your next favorite cherished wardrobe piece.
The overproduction of the fast fashion industry is toxic for our environment and our souls! My upcycled shirts are sustainable which keeps them out of landfills.
Because people come in all sizes. I’ve measured these shirts exhaustively, so we both can avoid the frustration of it not fitting. These are durable, timeless, Upcycled, Boho, Americana, surf shack eye-catching pieces handmade by me with pride and intention in my beachtown workshop by combining 2 shirts into one for warmth and style! Hey! Here’s the latest batch of upcycled shirts as of April, 2025. You reap what I sew. I stitch 2 thrifted shirts into 1 warm, sturdy upcycled piece of wearable art. Basically, one shirt becomes the lining of the other, creating combinations of colors and design that are each one of a kind, for sure. I have an industrial sewing machine that gives me gorgeous stitching, and each shirt is hand stitched to finish off the edging. I also combine surf trunks and jeans into unique quilted patterns, as well as making satchels from combining shirts and toddlers jeans. Thrifting over the weekend beget this pile of remarkable shirts that made for quite a great collection that will later be paired up two by two, creating my ‘reworked vintage’ apparel (a term I’ve been using of late to describe my output). My inventory has been thin in the small and extra large sizes, so what you see here in this haul is mostly those ends of the spectrum of sizes. So, yes, the term I’ve been using lately has been ‘reworked vintage’ to counter fast fashion that ends up discarded soon after a few wearings and ends up in landfills that can be seen from satellites overhead. I want to create lifetime pieces that you keep (#lovedclotheslast). How to name what I do? The first picture in this series is one I took of Kamala on the stage at the D.C. women’s march, Jan. 21, 2017. Cute girl in her dad’s arms wearing her pink hat. I’m looking to do something big like this again, somehow. That day was one of the most memorable, positive experiences of my life. I took the metro from my place in Virginia to the National Mall and got off at L’Enfant plaza, about 2 blocks short of where the main stage was going to be. It was so crowded, it took 30 minutes to exit the station. Halfway there, a guy in front of me said “We can’t move, isn’t this awesome?” I made my way to within 400 feet of the stage and saw Michael Moore, Ashley Judd (“nast-y, nast-y!”) Madonna, um,.. Scarlett Johansen, etc. I found out later that there were probably 400,00 people over my shoulder. (Look at all the pink hats in the last picture!) I’ve never felt a better sense of belonging. I’m looking for a gathering/event/collective that will coalesce the sane people and to figure out what is next. On that day in 2017, we didn’t even know how bad of a president he would be. And now? We’ve reelected this frumpy felon? We have to gather together, people! #notmypresident47

Here is my stab at stating what a problem ‘Fast Fashion’ has become in one quick visual. Our consumption is now, gotta admit, nuts. ‘Convenient’ new clothes are delivered right to our doorsteps for bizarre low prices. We don’t keep them long because they’re cheaply made. The average American buys 70 articles of clothing a year, (not including socks). If you buy less than that, be assured there’s someone who will average out your shortfall and buy more. Only 20% of second-hand donations are actually resold in the store. Buy less, choose well, make it last.
Clothes are just like friends, you want quality, not quantity. Slowing down and consuming less makes sense financially, ethically, and environmentally. Cheap fashion has both environmental costs and the cost of human labor that makes it. ‘Slow fashion’ for me is also about creating a personal relationship with my clothes. Keep and wear your clothes longer, repair them when they’re worn. Over time, your memories are woven into the fabric. When you reap what I sew, I’m hoping you’ll develop a relationship with the clothing I’ve repurposed for you.
Here come some hard truths: ‘Throwing things away’ is possible only when ‘Away’ is actually somewhere else, not ‘here’. Who will take in the refuse? The demand for new fabric is only met by manufacturing polyester, which is fossil fuel.
Such discarded polyester takes around 200 years to decompose fully. In the meantime, this waste leaches dangerous chemicals and microplastic fibers into
the groundwater while releasing greenhouse gasses, putting the the health and well- being of communities near these vast piles at risk. Can we live more sustainably? Here’s a pentaptych (5 panels, I looked it up) of my whole ‘Really Boss Apparel’ thang as it stands now. Open studios is next weekend and I wrote this out to have posters up that explain what I’m doing, so I’m putting it on social media, too. For a while now I’ve been doubling up and stitching together
my own clothes for warmth and style, but soon friends came knocking. Stitching became a meditation and I actually got kinda good at it. In parallel, I became a thrifter, buying cool and well-made secondhand clothes to work with and keeping them out of the landfills. Here is what the process of bringing a pair of shirts together looks like. I use colored hangers to group the shirts by size, here all the shirts that are on blue hangers are size small. Each shirt was chosen from out there in the secondhand world, one at a time, chosen just because they seemed to show promise on their own. But the serendipity unfolds when I’m ready to make a new reworked vintage shirt and I go to the shirts I’ve brought home - they almost reach for each other as I watch, now matched, I stitch them together and soon two hearts beat as one!

Yo, hey! I’m in the ‘Open Studios’ event coming up in Santa Cruz on October 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th.
I make what is called ‘slow fashion’ by reworking vintage clothes into what will last years, not weeks. Jeans combined with surf trunks for some warmth in the coming autumn and winter days. Same with my doubled up shirts. The fast fashion industry has ruined the relationship we have with our clothes. My stitching secondhand clothing has become a meditation keeping me m mindful, craftsmanship I’m mighty proud of. You reap what I sew!
‘Open Studios is a self-guided art tour that showcases 300+ local artists over three weekends in October throughout the county.
